Business Buzz: Taxi controversy parks at Hollister City Hall

LTD taxi driver David Baraby offers the city a $5 ride within seven miles in town. Hollister Taxi's owner has said their business can't compete with that deal.

Hollister City Council members next week are set to consider whether to approve a third taxicab carrier in the city.

The public hearing set for the 6:30 p.m. Monday meeting at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St., is for council members to weigh a license for LTD Taxi.

That business would be the third official taxi carrier in Hollister, along with Hollister Taxi and Yellowcab, for which council members approved a license in 2009 to become the second carrier.

LTD Taxi had been operating as a cab business in December before competitors spurred questions over its legality. LTD is a subsidiary of the LTD SUV Limousine Network and changed to using that moniker while seeking proper permits.

As for Monday’s meeting, Hollister requires new taxi companies to go through a police background check and consideration from the council whether a third company is necessary.
