Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, announced Wednesday farmers in San Benito County would be eligible to apply for federal disaster relief funds due to the region’s recent drought.
“The recent drought has impacted many of our local growers,” said Farr, the county’s congressman, in a statement. “Agriculture is the backbone of our Central Coast economy so I am pleased the Secretary recognized the need and made these programs available to provide relief.”
Overall, 27 counties in California can apply for the funds after being designated natural disaster areas by the government, including Monterey, Santa Clara and San Benito.
San Benito County is experiencing historically dry conditions. In 2013, the Hollister area had its driest year on record with just over 4 inches the entire calendar year.
