Group submits signatures to place fracking ban on ballot

Andy Hsia-Coron and Mary Hsia-Coron submit signatures at the county elections office Tuesday.

The San Benito Rising group submitted more than 4,000 signatures to the elections office Tuesday on Earth Day for a ballot proposal to ban fracking and limit oil extraction in the county.
The organization is pushing to have a measure placed on the November ballot asking residents to OK an outright ban on hydraulic fracturing while prohibiting other forms of oil extraction in residential rural zones of unincorporated San Benito County.
The group noted it submitted 4,167 signatures with just 1,642  – 10 percent of votes from the last gubernatorial election – needed to qualify for the ballot.
The elections office is set to review the validity of the petition signatures and rule whether there are enough of them – about 1,600 are needed – to qualify for the ballot.
Look back for more.
