Fair’s junior livestock auction raises $867K

Hollister FFA member Corissa King walks her lamb named Gunner back to his pen with help from Sophia Skow, 3, from Tres Pinos, at the San Benito County Fair last year.

The junior livestock auction, along with this year’s Heritage Hog, raised $867,000, according to a San Benito County Fair announcement.
According to the announcement from the fair:
This year’s Junior Livestock Auction sales tipped the scales at a whopping $867,000 at this year’s San Benito County Fair. Approximately 370 animals went through the auction being sold by the 4-H and FFA kids. The Heritage Hog, raised by high school senior, Sarah Nino, for the San Benito County Heritage Foundation, sold for $73,500. Proceeds from this special sale benefit the San Benito County Heritage Foundation. The foundation’s purpose is to provide funding for capital improvements for Bolado Park Event Center.
For the 3rd year in a row, state budget cuts have impacted the 76 county fairs throughout the state of California. In an effort to preserve the San Benito County Fair traditions and this treasured form of family entertainment for our community, the 33rd District Agricultural Association’s Board of Directors took bold steps to bolster the Fair’s funding to offset the budget cuts. Marketing sponsorships from local businesses and friends of the Fair poured in to support the event. The organization gratefully acknowledges Platinum Sponsors: Earthbound Farm and Holaday Seed Company as well as Gold Sponsors: Corbin, True Leaf Farms/Church Brothers, Taylor Farms and Bianchi, Kasavan and Pope, LLP.  They are joined by more than 40 other sponsors, all of whom came together to assist the 33rd District Agricultural Association and new Fair Manager/CEO Donnette Silva Carter in presenting an amazing fair. “The 2014 San Benito County Fair brought changes and new attractions which were blended with traditional offerings to provide a busy and fun-filled event for attendees. From the kick-off weekend of Ranch Rodeo and Horse Show happenings, to livestock shows and other exhibits through the week culminating with great weekend-long activities, our guests were definitely treated to a great deal of fair action. We thank the 17,000 people who braved the heat to join us in celebrating agriculture and our community. It was a great fair,” said Fair Manager/CEO Donnette Silva Carter.
