The monthly Veterans Family Dinner will be Jan. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building. All members of VFW Post 9242 and American Legion Post 69 and their families are encouraged to attend. There will be a nominal cost.
Veterans seeking information on their various benefits can contact V.A. Service Officer Rick Bernard any day at [email protected] or call (510) 493-1559.
Zachary Barrios, a seventh-grader from Southside School, was the winner of the 2014 VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for San Benito County. His essay on “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans” was judged first out of 75 entries. His essay, along with those from runners-up Sean Slavich and Christina Peterson from Sacred Heart School, were forwarded to the 12th District (which covers an area from South San Francisco to King City) for the next level of competition.
Zachary received a check for $100 from VFW Post 9242. Sean Slavich and fellow student Christina Peterson from Sacred Heart—along with fellow runners-up Chad Champion from Cienega School, Alexandria Baer from Spring Grove School, Joseph Bisceglia from Tres Pinos School and Isabella Donati from Southside School—will each receive a $25 check.
Both the VFW and American Legion Posts are encouraging all veterans, but particularly Iraq and Afghanistan vets, to visit either organization to see what they can offer in comradeship and benefits information.
VFW Post 9242 meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. American Legion Post 69 meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St., Hollister.
