Hollister officials appear ready to buy body cameras for police officers in the coming fiscal year.
Hollister council members held a budget hearing Thursday and were presented recommendations for one-time expenditures in the next fiscal year due to additional revenue sources. Paying about $24,000 for police body cameras from the general fund was on the list, and council members in attendance Thursday—Councilwoman Mickie Luna was absent—showed support for the idea.
Police Chief David Westrick in September told the Free Lance he had been exploring options for body cameras. Council members in the fall also approved spending $87,000 in grant funds for new in-car cameras.
The department’s considerations come at a time when police brutality concerns are on the nation’s radar.
