Gavilan classes give back to local food bank

Gavilan gives back

Gavilan College Professor Adrian Andrade noticed the mother and father taking turns holding signs that asked for help while the other parent watched young kids sitting on the trunk of a nearby car in Gilroy.
“It kind of got to me,” he said.
When Andrade shared the experience with students in his small group communications class, which meets at the Briggs Building in downtown Hollister, they decided to reach out to the Community Food Bank of San Benito County, to offer a helping hand.
The students secured barrels, which have been positioned inside the Briggs Building, to collect donations. The campaign will run from March 30 to May 6. The class chose to assist the food bank because they wanted the focus to be on helping kids, the professor said.
Andrade is giving his students class time to meet and give progress reports, he said. The students formed small groups with names, slogans and logos to run the campaign, the professor said. Some Gavilan teachers are also offering extra credit to students that bring in at least one can of food for the drive, he said.
