As part of America on the Move Week, the YMCA staff solicited local businesses to have their employees participate in tracking their steps for the week. Those who signed up for the challenge – with the goal of walking 10,000 steps a day – were given a booklet with information about the program was well as a red pedometer to wear for the week. The program booklet, put together by the America on the Move Foundation, with which the YMCA has partnered this year to provide health programs to local YMCAs, offers tips for getting healthy. Some of those include simple things such as taking 2,000 more steps a day or eating 100 fewer calories.

The booklet also has a guide for translating other activities into steps so that participants can mix in other physical activities. Some of those listed inlcuded low-impact aerobic dancing – equal to 142 steps per minute for a woman; bowling – equal to 73 steps per minute for a man; and vacuuming – equal to an average of 80 steps per minute.
