Local entrepreneur and philanthropist Fernando Gonzalez, 66, recalled the story of his father fleeing across the border in 1914 into the U.S. to escape the seemingly endless Mexican Revolution, as his brother, who was just 15, returned to fight.
The Community Foundation for San Benito County launched a new endowment that is focused on serving the local Latino community on July 30. The Latino Generations Endowment is the focus of the Latino Advisory Committee, a charter of the Community Foundation.

California Indian Market: The 29th annual California Indian Market in San Juan Bautista is set for May 4 and May 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days. The market, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and to honor troops and veterans, will take place at the San Juan School soccer lot at The Alameda and Highway 156. Featured themes include "Native American, Western, wildlife arts and crafts vendors, drums, dancers and food," according to a market announcement. While the 12 Days of Giving campaign held a finale on Dec. 8, residents can continue to give to the campaign through the end of the month with a total match of up to $20,000 for every dollar donated through the end of 2012.
The San Benito County Historical Society launched its “Heritage Wall” campaign to support the rebuilding of the Dunneville Dance Hall at the San Benito County Historical Park. The original dance hall blew over in a storm on New Year’s Day in 2006.
