Several residents from around the county and representatives from one major employer in San Juan Bautista expressed concern over the direction county fire service could take Tuesday morning as the San Benito County supervisors reviewed proposals from the city of Hollister and Calfire for consolidated services.

The San Benito County Fire Protection Committee will meet Thursday, at 8:30 a.m., at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St., in Hollister. The committee includes representatives from the County of San Benito, Hollister and San Juan Bautista, as well as representatives from the fire agencies that service the county and cities.

Local law enforcement agencies, with assistance from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, State Parole and UNET, arrested seven people during a compliance sweep in Hollister on Friday at 6 a.m.

Del Webb has resurfaced again in San Benito County – more than six years after its attempt to build the 4,400-home “Sun City” near the airport – but this time with plans to develop about a quarter of the units on property at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

The pickup truck driver pursued by authorities for more than 30 minutes Tuesday from Hollister to Gilroy escaped on foot, but the investigating sheriff’s office reported that it might have a positive identification on the suspect.
