‘Mary Poppins’ show is a family affair

The San Benito Stage Company’s run of Mary Poppins at the Granada Theatre has a family-friendly touch from the production team all the way down to the audience.

Identities, love stories, affairs and humor tangle together in the San Benito Stage Company’s newest theater production, which opens Friday in downtown Hollister.

Jazz Under the Stars: The Homeless Coalition of San Benito County will host its eighth annual Jazz Under the Stars fundraiser July 27, from 6 to 9 p.m., at St. Benedict’s Hall, 1200 Fairview Road. The event will feature Magnolia Jazz Band, food, wine and a silent auction. Tables are available for 10 people for $500 or individual tickets are available for $50 per person. Diamond Sponsors get a table for 10 for $1,000. The event is outdoors and is open to guests 21 and older. To RSVP, call Doug Emerson at 831-637-8399.

Kids rock the stage

As the temperature kicked up last week so did the anticipation for the fun-filled week of Kids Rule Theatre Camp. Kristy Burchard, the founder and director of the program, and her team of volunteering teens and adults were ready to rock another summer of phenomenal performances. After much preparation, everyone was ready to kick off the program’s 11th year at Sacred Heart Parish School. Many of the people who helped make this program possible can be described as one big theatrical family. I was extremely fortunate to be part of this family once again as a camp counselor for one of the groups.

California Indian Market: The 29th annual California Indian Market in San Juan Bautista is set for May 4 and May 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days. The market, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and to honor troops and veterans, will take place at the San Juan School soccer lot at The Alameda and Highway 156. Featured themes include "Native American, Western, wildlife arts and crafts vendors, drums, dancers and food," according to a market announcement. Healthy Kids Day: The YMCA of San Benito County will host Healthy Kids Day April 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 351 Tres Pinos Road, in Hollister. The event will include information about the YMCA programs and summer camps, as well as informational booths of other community organizations. The day will include fun activities that focus on health and wellness. The event is free, though families can pay to join the YMCA or sign up for programs. Those who register for YMCA summer camps will receive an early registration rate and a free camp T-shirt. Details: 637-8600.

‘Wonderland: The Alice Story’: Fifth Wall Theater Project presents “Wonderland: The Alice Story” Feb. 15-23, at the Wisteria Room at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, 3800 Airline Hwy. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students, public workers and Ridgemark residents with a valid ID. Local plays make for an odd pair

Two local theater groups both have shows opening Friday night. The Fifth Wall Theater Project will open an original play based on the “Alice in Wonderland” story while San Benito Stage Company will become the first amateur theater group to present “Spamalot” on the Central Coast.

SBSC Annual Members’ Choice Awards: The San Benito Stage Company will host its Annual Members’ Choice Awards Feb. 2, at 6:30 p.m., at the Granada Theater. Doors will open with refreshments served at 6 p.m. The annual event is an opportunity to thank volunteers, supporters and participants for their involvement throughout the year.
