Room of Dreams: Balers set to open sparkling facility

San Benito High wrestling coach Steven Salcedo never thought he would see this day. Same goes for junior varsity football coach Chris Cameron. The list goes on and on, with scores of people within the Haybalers athletics program dying to see the school replace the archaic weight room and wrestling facility with a modernized version.

Guest View: Whine without solutions on athletic balance

Whine and complain, moan and groan, it appears that’s all your “Community ‘Insight’ board” can do. Throwing slings and arrows out and never once offering a solution to the problem. I do not even intend to argue about the “intentional deceit” of your editorial.

State Track: Villegas keeps the pace in return trip

Back in the CIF State Track and Field Championships for the second straight year, Marisa Villegas enjoyed her experience every bit as much from last season. Villegas, who just completed her junior year, ran the 1600-meter race in a time of 5 minutes, 2.71 seconds to take 16th overall last Friday at Buchanan High in Clovis.

Kosmicki: Sports media stumble with Green-Adams strife

More than three decades after late broadcaster Howard Cosell’s national admonishment for describing a Washington Redskins running back as “little monkey” during Monday Night Football, our imperious national sports media gave Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams an inexplicable pass for the same stupidity.

Volleyball: Gonzalez inspirational in his play

Every time Chris Gonzalez has taken the court this season, he’s done it with a heavy heart. Last summer, Gonzalez’s father, Armando, died in a motorcycle accident. He was 37.

Track and Field: Balers on the right track

As Annie Breger was in the middle of the high jump competition with teammates Camille Finley and Bernadette Forbush, she couldn’t help but think about how far everyone has come. The three all attended Southside School, as did junior running standout Marisa Villegas.

Volleyball: Balers can’t finish Cougars

Tuesday’s match between the Christopher High and San Benito High boys volleyball teams featured one of the favorites to win the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division against one of the more inexperienced squads. Experience won over youth as the Cougars rebounded from a Game 1 loss to beat the host Haybalers in four games.

Soccer: San Benito set up for the future

This year’s San Benito High girls soccer team could make the case it was the best team in school history. The Haybalers won their first-ever Central Coast Section playoff game (not counting a forfeit victory against Palo Alto three years ago) before falling to Presentation 4-0 in a Division I quarterfinal on Feb. 27.

Boys Volleyball: Balers look to grow up fast

What the San Benito High boys volleyball team lacks in experience, it hopes to make up for in maturing talent. First-year Haybalers coach Eric Adams sees plenty of promise with his team, even though some of his players are in their first year of playing the sport.

Girls Soccer: Balers make history

The San Benito High girls soccer team made history on Wednesday night, whipping host Westmont 4-1 in a Central Coast Section Division I playoff opener. The Haybalers won their first-ever section playoff game (not counting a forfeit victory over Palo Alto three years ago that was awarded one day after the game was played).
