The number of San Benito County foreclosures in May increased by 33 percent over the prior month, while there were 41 more notices of default, according to RealtyTrac figures released today.

The foreclosure bump in May followed a prior month in which the rate dropped slightly. Perhaps the most astounding figure was the 127 notices of default filed – the first stage of foreclosure – which represented a 49 percent spike.

San Benito County’s foreclosure figures in May also signaled a 9 percent decline when compared with the same month in 2008, according to the report. The May 2009 figures rank San Benito as having the 6th-worst per capita foreclosure rate in the state, with one in every 80 homes in some stage of the process. Last month, San Benito County was 11th worst.

As a whole in California, there were 92,249 homes in foreclosure, a decline of 4.5 percent from the prior month, according to RealtyTrac.
