San Benito and Monterey Calfire firefighters muscled in some serious donations to improve the quality of life for local families.
The unit raised $9,686 this month in a Hollister “Fill-the-Boot” campaign aimed at collecting money to helpfamilies living with a muscle disease.
Firefighters gathered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday Nov. 6 at the intersection of Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road to take donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association from motorists and pedestrians, according to a press release fromAngela Rauch, a fundraising coordinator.
By standing in the street asking for donations, they joined a national campaign in which firefighters solicit money for the nonprofit by holding out a boot to passing drivers.
The MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neuromuscular diseases, according to the association’s website.
Funds raised in “fill-the-boot” campaigns will go toward clinical visits, x-rays, therapy, research, flu shots, a summer camp for kids and group support sessions, according to the MDA’s website.
