latest Better Newspapers Contest, winners of which were announced
over the weekend in Monterey.
The Free Lance and the Weekend Pinnacle were awarded a total of six California Newspaper Publishers Association awards at the latest Better Newspapers Contest, winners of which were announced over the weekend in Monterey.

Staff photographer Nick Lovejoy won a total of three awards, including first place for best general news photo, second place for best sports photo – both in the small weekly category – and first place for a photo essay in the Pinnacle for weeklies that are 11,001 to 25,000 in circulation.

Free Lance Sports Editor Andrew Matheson won two awards, including first place for best overall sports coverage and second place for best sports story in the small weekly category.

Weekend Pinnacle City Editor Melissa Flores won second place for best investigative report for her two part story titled “Old hospital houses homeless” and “An American dream lost.”

The CNPA Better Newspapers awards are aimed to reward the best daily and weekly newspapers in the state. Nearly 4,000 entries in 28 categories are judged each year.

The two other papers in the South Valley Newspapers group also took home awards. The Gilroy Dispatch won three awards, and the Morgan Hill Times won four.
