Alejo honored

San Benito County’s state Assemblyman Luis Alejo was honored by the League of United Latin American Citizens last week in Washington, D.C., for his “leadership and service to the Latino community,” according to an announcement from his office.
According to Alejo’s announcement:
Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), chairman of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, attended the League of United Latin American Citizens’ (LULAC) 18th Annual Legislative Conference and Awards Gala in Washington D.C. where he was honored with the LULAC National Legislative Award for his leadership and service to the Latino community, including passing landmark legislation in California like AB60 (drivers licenses for immigrants) and AB10 (raising the CA minimum wage to $10, the highest in the country).
“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the oldest Latino civil rights organization in the country,” states Alejo.  “This award represents LULAC’s civil-rights vision of engaging, invigorating, and mobilizing Latinos across the United States.  As Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, I look forward to carrying LULAC’s vision in California.”
The Legislative Conference began yesterday in Washington, DC where the country’s leading issue experts and advocacy leaders led a series of workshops to discuss how inequalities in health, education, technology and immigration affect the Latino community. Members of Congress and Administration officials participated in various conference panels around the Nation’s Capitol.
This evening, 18th Annual LULAC National Awards Gala highlighted key leaders who served the Latino community with distinction. In addition to the award honoring Alejo, the LULAC National Leadership Award went to Dr. Juliet V. Garcia, Executive Director, The University of Texas Americas Institute; and the LULAC National Public Service Award went given to Antonio Villaraigosa, 41st Mayor of Los Angeles.
“We know that when you champion for the least among us, the poor, the disenfranchised – you end up lifting everyone up,” states Alejo.  “I want to thank LULAC for all its tremendous advocacy, we have done a lot, but we still have a lot of work.  It won’t be easy, but we will do it together, and together we are strong.”
Luis Alejo represents the 30th District in the California State Assembly, which consists of the Salinas Valley, Monterey County, San Benito County, South Santa Clara County and the city of Watsonville in Santa Cruz County.
