Mariano A. Sagun, a former long-time resident of Hollister and San Juan Bautista, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at Kaiser Santa Teresa Hospital in San Jose. He was 101.

Mr. Sagun was born in the Philippine Islands and educated there by nuns. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, and maintained his home and garden in Hollister until last year, when he moved to San Jose. Before his death he was one of five living generations of his family, and was the last of his parents’ three sons and two daughters.

He worked for the Ideal Cement Plant in San Juan Bautista for 25 years and was a foreman for the Holthouse Ranch in the Fallon Road area for many years. His family said he was well-liked and respected for his integrity and honesty in doing business.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the American Legion Post in Hollister and the Fil Visayan Lodge as well as many other Filipino organizations througout California, all of which he attended. He was an avid fisherman and loved new cars, paying cash – he never wrote checks – for one every year.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Leon H. and Elizabeth Sagun of Santa Maria; his long-time caregiver Frances Hernandez; one grandson, two great-grandsons and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Magdalena H. Sagun, in 1989.

Visitation will be on Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Family and friends will leave the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. Saturday for a Mass at Mission San Juan Bautista at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
