The San Benito County Board of Supervisors approved waivers to continue a salary reduction and to contribute 4 percent of their pay to the PERS retirement fund at a May 1 supervisors meeting.
The supervisors had approved a 5 percent salary reduction on July 1, 2011 and reduced their salaries an additional 3 percent on Jan 1. They will continue to 8 percent reduction in the 2012-13 year.
At the meeting, the supervisors also approved a waiver to contribute 4 percent of their income to the Public Employee’s Retirement System, starting on July 1.
The waiver forms that they signed acknowledge that the reduction is voluntary and that it will not be revoked at the end of the fiscal year.
The estimated savings to the county of the salary reductions and retirement contributions is $26,790 for the year.
The supervisors will continue to prepare for what is expected to be a $5.3 million gap in the 2012-13 budget. At a special meeting this morning, the supervisors were expected to approve layoff notices for 23 positions within the county.
They would also approve leaving several open positions vacant and reducing the work week of others, for a reduction in staffing equivalent to 30.35 full-time employees. County Administrative Officer Rich Inman brought the item before the board and called for immediate action on moving forward with the layoffs in order to realize the full savings for the next fiscal year.
The budget ad-hoc committee members also were expected to recommend the 2012-13 budget policies, which the supervisors will use when they go through the budget hearing process in the coming months.
