Hollister police Tuesday arrested a man suspected in a gang-related attack at a Hollister restaurant in early December, according to police.
Police arrested Samuel Canela, identified as a suspect in a Dec. 5 assault outside Paine’s Restaurant.
According to a statement from police:
At about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Hollister police officers responded to the 100 block of Gonzalez Drive on an anonymous tip that Canela was at a residence in that area. Officers approached the area on foot, and saw a subject matching Canela’s description walk into the backyard of a residence on that street, police alleged in the statement.
Officers gained permission to search the property, and found Canela hiding behind a shed in the backyard. Canela was taken into custody and booked into the San Benito County Jail on a $90,000 warrant alleging assault with a deadly weapon with an added gang enhancement, assault causing great bodily injury with an added gang enhancement, and an additional, separate, gang enhancement charge. Canela was also booked on a $10,000 warrant charging domestic violence.
Police already had arrested Jose Jaime, 25, Alexander Trujillo, 18, Michael Mendoza, 22, and Alberto Colmenero, 24, on accusations of assault with a deadly weapon, battery causing great bodily harm, conspiracy to commit a criminal act, and street terrorism.
The fight occurred around midnight outside the restaurant on East Street, police alleged, after the suspects singled out a member of a rival gang and attacked him. Officers identified the suspects after using the restaurant’s surveillance system.
San Benito County probation officers and California state probation officers also helped to identify the suspects.
The Hollister Police Department noted how it would like to thank everyone who provided information regarding Canela’s whereabouts during the time he evaded capture.
