The YMCA of San Benito County recently announced sign-ups for two unique programs — T-ball for preschoolers and afterschool flag football.

The T-ball program is for participants ages 2.5 to 5 years old, and is designed to encourage a love for the game and companionship between players through the teaching of skills, development of positive attitudes about fair play, teamwork and reinforcement of the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

The program will run two sessions at Dunne Park in Hollister (located downtown off Seventh Street), one running on Saturdays from March 5 to April 9, with the second running on Saturdays from April 30 to June 4.

Cost is $45 for one session, $90 for both. Financial assistance is available.

The YMCAs afterschool flag football program is for boys and girls in third- and fourth-grade, and is part of the YMCAs collaboration with local schools.

Practices will be held once a week after school, starting the week of March 21. Tournament games will be played against other schools during the third Saturday and the sixth Saturday of the season.

Cost is $50. Financial assistance is available.

Volunteer coaches are needed for each team. Contact the YMCA for an application.

Frys.com Open to return to CordeValle

The Frys.com Open is coming back to San Martin.

Tournament Director Ian Knight announced last week that the PGA fall series tournament will return to CordeValle Golf Club on Oct. 3-9.

“There is an excitement in the air at the tournament office as we begin preparations for the 2011 Frys.com Open,” Knight said in a statement. “Our goals this year are two-fold: we want to increase our charitable donations and economic impact to Silicon Valley while providing fans an opportunity to watch the finest players on the PGA TOUR battle for the $900,000 first place check.”

Information on tickets, pro-am spots and volunteering options can all be found on the tournament’s website at: frysopengolf.com

Last year, Rocco Mediate enthralled fans in the gallery with an eagle from the fairway on the 17th hole during the final day of competition to cap a comeback and earn his first tour victory in eight years.

The field will again feature 132 players, the statement said, with a purse of $5 million.

Annual Mud Run set for March 26, sold out to participants

The sixth annual Mud Run, presented by the Big Sur International Marathon in cooperation with the Presidio of Monterey — Morale, Welfare and Recreation and Cal State University Monterey Bay, will take place on Saturday, March 26.
