A Madera man who crashed his car into a guard rail later fell off a bridge over Coyote Creek and died, police said.

The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, when the 32-year-old driver of a 2007 Chevy Cobalt spun out on U.S. 101 just north of Morgan Hill. He hit the side of a bridge over Coyote Creek, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jaime Rios. The accident happened in rainy weather and while the freeway was wet.

For an unknown reason or reasons, the driver exited the car after the accident and fell off the bridge. Officers who responded to the scene saw the man below the freeway and called emergency medical services.

The man, whose name police did not release, was transported to San Jose Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police do not think the man’s passenger, his 32-year-old brother, saw the driver fall off the bridge. The passenger was not injured.

The accident, which caused “minor damage” to the vehicle, is still under investigation. Rios said the driver’s death was not a direct result of the crash, and police do not suspect foul play.

“At this time, we’re not investigating this as a fatal collision,” Rios said.
