Hollister police Thursday arrested two local men at Marguerite Maze School who were on the campus without a purpose and are investigating whether they may be linked to recent reports of students being followed home or lured, according to a press statement from the department.
The arrests came a day after the most recently reported incident at or near the school. Police recommended charges for the 32-year-old alleging possession of marijuana on a school campus, disruptive presence on a school campus and violation of probation. Suggested charges at this point for the 36-year-old include possession of marijuana on a school campus and having a warrant out for his arrest. They were booked into the San Benito County Jail.
The first two reported incidents that are similar in nature occurred Jan. 22 and Jan. 29.
On Wednesday, police responded at 7:30 a.m. to a report of a male subject trying to get a female student at the school into his vehicle, according to the statement.
The student reported she had been walking on Memorial Drive near Sunnyslope Elementary School and that a man driving a tan Dodge car with black pin stripes and tinted windows approached and asked if she wanted a ride, according to police. When she declined, the driver told her to “get in” the car. At that point, the student saw a nearby friend and yelled to call the police, and the driver sped away westbound on Hillcrest Road, according to the statement. The girl described the driver as possibly Hispanic with dark hair and a beard.
Police go on to note how school beat Officer Carlos Rodriguez, who arrested the two men, is conducting further investigation to determine any possible connection they may have to the other incidents.
