San Benito County supervisors are considering a policy to supplement employees’ pay who are activated for military service.
San Benito County currently allows up to 30 days of paid leave for military service. Board members discussed the issue at their meeting this week because a sheriff’s office deputy is being activated for duty overseas in a conflict area.
Human resources staff members presented three options for supervisors at the Tuesday meeting. Board members gave staff members their preference so an official amendment can be made. If ultimately approved, the change would mean employees activated for military service would receive the difference in pay between their county wages and military income.
The preferred plan requires that the county employee is employed for at least 12 months prior to the military service.
Such supplemental pay programs have become increasingly commonplace with government agencies.
