It looks as though there will be a runoff in the race for San Benito County sheriff between Pat Turturici and Darren Thompson, according to unofficial election figures.

With counting done tonight – and provisional ballots the only ones left to tally – Turturici had gained 47.4 percent, or 3,414 votes. Thompson had 24.7 percent, or 1,782 votes. Since Turturici likely will not eclipse the 50 percent mark, the two are set to run off in the November election.

“Yeah, so far I’m happy with the results,” said Turturici, the San Benito County undersheriff, earlier tonight. “So far, so good.”

Thompson when interviewed earlier tonight said he is fine with second place if it forces a November runoff.

“I’m a little disappointed the numbers aren’t a little closer, but I hope we get to a runoff,” said Thompson, a Watsonville police lietenant, when Turturici had been closer to the 50 percent mark earlier.

Hollister police Sgt. Ray Wood finished in third, with 17.6 percent, or 1,267 votes, according to the figures. Marshal Robert Scattini had 10 percent, or 722 votes.
