Targeting breeds is wrong
I read your August 20th editorial opposing the city council’s
plan to target Pit Bulls and Chihuahuas, and I agree. I also
wholeheartedly agree that the shelter should reverse its policy of
not adopting out Pit Bulls to the general public. I work in Pit
Bull rescue, and I spoke with the city attorney to inform her that
such a policy actually violates state law. Sonoma had an even less
restrictive policy with Pit Bulls and its shelter had to reverse
that policy after realizing it was against state law.
For your reference, here is the news story about the Sonoma
shelter policy:

We hope that the Hollister shelter will immediately reverse its
policy of not adopting out Pit Bulls and comply with state law. Not
only is it the legal thing to do, it’s the right thing to do.
