A single-vehicle accident occurred a little after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 156 between Hollister and San Juan Bautista, when an 18-year-old driver lost control of his car and veered off the roadway, flipping it off an embankment.

The black Toyota Tercel rested upside down facing toward San Juan Bautista as emergency personnel put the driver inside an ambulance. The car’s front window was smashed and its front bumper was disfigured.

The driver was sent to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, Officer Gary Gray said. The driver suffered cuts on his right arm and bruises.

The accident happened when a vehicle in front of the Tercel slammed on its breaks, causing the driver to do the same and go off the highway. The car was westbound before the driver lost control.

The momentum of the car going into a side embankment caused the car to flip and rotate.

Traffic going both ways was slowed on Highway 156 after the accident.
