50-acre park may open by end of the month
Hollister’s newest park, the 50-acre grassy field irrigated by treated wastewater just past the San Juan Hwy. bridge on the city’s west side, is now slated for a September opening – the latest delay for the as-yet-unnamed park.
“We’re probably looking at later in September at this point,” said Clay Lee, Hollister’s community services director. “We have no specific date at this point, but all the access roads are complete. We are dealing with some irrigation issues related to the quality of the reclaimed water and we have to complete some signage and parking striping, but everything else is pretty much in place.”
The park, on the former Brigantino property on the west side of the San Benito River, was originally slated for a springtime opening.
The city paid $5 million for the parcel primarily as a place to utilize treated wastewater from the sewage plant. The acres of grass are irrigated using a high-tech system that monitors wind speeds and weather conditions to ensure proper watering.
The city has addressed grading issues at the site and added a fence along the riverbank, which drops nearly 15 feet from park level in some places.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Commission is expected to consider a name for the park in the coming weeks.
“We’re getting there slowly but surely,” Lee said.
