Two men are injured but alive after their pickup truck careened off Hecker Pass Highway and fell 200 feet on Monday.
The driver, Rolando Duran, 26, of San Jose, was traveling eastbound on Highway 152 at about 40 mph, 12:38 p.m. Monday, when he lost control “for some unknown reason” and sailed off the side of the winding, two-lane road that traverses the Santa Cruz Mountains, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The speed limit on that stretch of road is 45 mph, said Officer Matt Peters.
Both the driver and his passenger, a 20-year-old Gilroyan, crawled up the embankment and walked about a quarter mile to find help, Peters said.
Duran complained of pain from a facial contusion and was treated at the scene. His passenger was taken via ambulance to San Jose Regional Medical Center for similar injuries.
Duran and his passenger are “pretty lucky guys,” Peters said.
As a result of the accident, traffic on Highway 152 alternated for about an hour while a tow truck crew worked to haul the truck out of the brush.
