The Cinco de Mayo scholarship dinner and dance planned for this weekend has been canceled, confirmed the president of a local nonprofit.
The annual event hosted by the nonprofit Mexican American Committee on Education has been postponed to mid-September so the event can be combined with a celebration of the Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16.
“We’re working on a contract right now to get a well-known band,” said Veronica Lezama, the president of the group. “But since we don’t have a contract, I don’t want to say who it is.”
Lezama confirmed that the change of dates didn’t have anything to do with ticket sales but rather with the group’s desire to schedule a well-known band for a larger event later in the year.
“We’re hoping that we’re going to be doing something where more people can attend the event,” she said.
