School starts up in South County
Well, summer is almost officially over for all South County
folks. Bitterwater and Jefferson school students where back in
school this week, as well as King City High School. This weekend is
Labor Day weekend, and, before we know it, the holidays will be

Well, summer is almost officially over for all South County folks. Bitterwater and Jefferson school students where back in school this week, as well as King City High School. This weekend is Labor Day weekend, and, before we know it, the holidays will be here. Whew, time sure does fly by the older we get!

The Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association held their annual roping and ranch rodeo a couple weekends ago in King City. Some of those participating from South County included: The Hurley Family, the Sans Family, the Barrington Family, Colleen and Casey Sabin, J.W. Brewen, Carlos Castillo, Shane Higgins, Vern Simmons and Vern and Jo Ann Scattini. Congratulations to J.W. Brewen, Andy Barrington, Hec Hurley and Ronnie Garcia for winning the Open Calf Branding, to Vern Scattini, Todd Sans, Frank Johnson and J.W. Brewen for winning the match calf branding, to Taylor Jo Hurley and Brody Sans for winning the junior calf branding, to Wacey Barrington for winning the dummy roping and again to Hec Hurley for winning the steer stopping. Ronnie Garcia won the All-Around Saddle that was donated in memory of the Violini Brothers.

Get well wishes go out to Vickie Sabin who had an emergency appendectomy a couple weeks ago. Vickie has been the rodeo secretary for Cattlemen’s for many years so it was an especially tough weekend for her to be out of commission. Not only did she miss secretarying the rodeo, but everyone missed her as well. She is home now and on the road to a quick recovery. Get well soon Vick, we sure missed you!

Birthday wishes go out to Twyster Hurley who celebrated his 10th birthday on August 24th. He celebrated with a pizza party last Monday night, with lots of family and friends.

Candace Brewen and the girls spent a weekend in Sacramento at the State Fair where Emily showed many of her 4-H beef projects. She did very well at the fair, which is no surprise, as she has such good showmanship. She ended up second in two classes with both her heifer and her steer, and she made the cut in showmanship and ended up eleventh in the junior showmanship class.
