SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Behind Alex Flores and Jessica Frusetta, the Anzar High girls volleyball team swept visiting Gonzales in three games (25-16, 25-14, 25-23) Tuesday night in San Juan Bautista.
Flores had nine kills and four aces, while Frusetta added eight kills and three aces.
“It was probably her best hitting game so far,” Anzar head coach Jennifer Daughenbaugh said of Frusetta.
The victory gives the Hawks a 2-3 record in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 7-9 overall.
“They were playing really good defense,” Daughenbaugh said. “One struggle has been reading hits, and they did much better with that tonight. That part’s coming together.”
Up two games early, Daughenbaugh used Game 3 to play some players at different positions. She placed Carly Johnson, normally a setter, at the defensive specialist position, where she recorded a pair of digs, while also moving middle blocker Nicole Seymour to the back row, where she recorded four digs.
“They’re getting better at being flexible – for me to throw them a curve ball and adjust to it,” she said. “Hopefully, they can show that against a tougher opponent.”
Johnson also compiled 19 assists and four aces, while Camille Merz tacked on four kills and five digs. Sydnee Masuen added three aces and six digs, and Nicole Mello had seven digs.
Anzar will visit Soledad Thursday night. Match time is 6 p.m.
