Three seats are open on the board of supervisors
Three candidates have entered the race for the open supervisorial seat in District 1. They include Margie Barrios, Bonnie Flores-Voropaeff and Grant Brians.

Wednesday was the deadline to turn in a nomination bid for the seat on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. Candidates in the other open districts, 2 and 5, had a deadline of last Friday because there were incumbents running in those areas. If there is no incumbent, the district’s prospective candidates have an extra five days to turn in their nomination papers.

The winner of the June 3 race will take over for Don Marcus, who isn’t running for reelection after one term in office.

Flores-Voropaeff said officials have to work better on spurring business and job growth and that she would do that if elected. She owns Design Line & Granger Printing and has been a business owner for 20 years. She wants to find the right niche for the community, she said.

Brians, who also ran for the seat in 2004, has been a farmer for nearly 34 years and said he will focus on community participation. He has seen the upside and downside to people here not being informed, he said. “An issue that has to be faced is the absolute reality of hard economic times,” he said.

Barrios, a Hollister School Board trustee for nearly 20 years, said in a previous interview that she has the right experience and is well suited for the job. She will concentrate on economic development, transportation, public safety and jobs, she said.

In District 2, incumbent Anthony Botelho is running against Anthony Freitas – the two faced off in 2004 as well. In District 5, Marian Cruz is facing incumbent Jaime De La Cruz. *
