Can a bird as simple and ordinary as a chicken really inspire a fun-filled celebration, with a parade and everything?
In San Juan Bautista, yes, it can.
Hundreds of people braved a warm spring weekend to attend the city’s second annual Chicken Festival and Parade, held April 26-27. The event featured a variety of activities, including crowing contests, arts and crafts booths, live entertainment, a kids’ zone sponsored by the YMCA, a complete chicken barbecue, a Chicken Queen contest, wine tasting and a raffle.
Residents got into the spirit of things by dressing up in chicken costumes, such as Dylan Pfister, 13, while others brought live chickens in cages. The festival’s theme did not stop attendees from enjoying barbecued chicken, courtesy of the San Juan Service Club.
The San Juan Bautista Chicken Festival and Parade is sponsored by the city’s Chamber of Commerce.
