Bob picks the ticket
When famed director Sydney Pollack died this week it reminded me
of the time I was quoted in USA Today. Pollack had won the best
director Academy Award for

Out of Africa.

That same year Steven Spielberg directed the superior

Color Purple

with best actress nomination for Whoopie Goldberg and two
supporting nominations for Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery.

The Color Purple

had been nominated for a total of 11 Oscars, including the three
best actress nominations, but Spielberg unbelievably was not even
nominated for best director. Pollack won but no one he directed won
so I mused in USA Today that Spielberg was robbed. Pollack wins for
best director for a film in which none of his actors win, so what
in the hell did he win for directing, the scenery?

My job on earth is very simple. Just make everything perfect. When I left Hollister the Board of Supervisors was a perfect mix but the Pinnacle editorial board with their recent endorsements would give way to making Hollister nothing but South San Jose.

As usual my endorsements are different than the hand that feeds me. Big bucks, fast cars and faster women are on the line thanks to the Pinnacle but I must disagree with their endorsements.

The easiest is my disagreement with their picking Jaime De La Cruz. Just follow the money. Do you think all those out-of-town developers are giving him money for no reason at all? The race in District 5 is easy. Vote for Marian Cruz and your kids’ future of not having to live in South San Jose. Cough, cough.

There is a reason Grant Brians’ political ad was next to a religious ad. Grant doesn’t have a prayer to win in District 1. Grant would make one of the finest supervisors ever as this guy cannot be bought and he and his family have a great history of trying to make San Benito County or rather, keep San Benito County, one of the most environmentally friendly counties on the planet.

My last pick is the most difficult. Not because Anthony Botelho, the current supervisor for mostly San Juan Bautista, and his family hate my guts but because his opponent is a great guy. But the edge has got to go to keeping Anthony Botelho because this man loves San Juan Bautista and San Juan Bautista has always been short-changed by the board who think Hollister is San Benito County. Botelho’s opponent thinks in much grander terms for the good of the county which impressed the Pinnacle editorial board. As for me I like Botelho focusing more on getting things done for San Juan Bautista because many times what the other four members of the board think is good for Hollister is not necessarily good for the poor residents of San Juan. Let’s run our Hollister traffic problems through San Juan, tear down the mission if need be! Give San Juan as little deputy sheriff patrols as legally possible but let’s take their taxes with a smile.

Keep Botelho fighting for you in San Juan. No one else is.

Get well, Gary. You deserve nothing but the best. Why you married her I don’t know but she does send me candy every time I mention my son David is here on a visit. Did I mention my son is here on a visit?

And what a great visit. David and I love watching the worst movies ever made like “Troll” which is about horrible little monsters taking over San Francisco. We had to pause one scene in the teen’s bedroom as he had the obligatory 49er banner but next to it was a Dallas Cowboy banner too! Did I tell you the San Francisco-based film with Michael Moriarity was produced and filmed in Italy and to them apparently they think the Dallas Cowboys banner must be on the wall of every 49er fan. Wonder why they lost the war? Aye chee waa waa.

Next week: Why Aurelio Zuniga should be emperor of Hollister.

Even the Los Angeles Times makes like the Gilroy Dispatch. Loved this headline: “Man, 29, stops breathing, dies.”

Senator Obama lashes out at the press for criticizing his wife. I agree … unless she keeps her big mouth shut. Aye chee waa waa.

Have you read Barbara Walters’ books? Yes, I have slept with Barbara Walters. More next week. Hint: She grades on a curve. Oy vey!
