It is a sound that just may be unique to Hollister – the roar of thousands of motorcycle engines taking over the streets of downtown.

From July 11-13, Hollister residents and business owners gave over the city core to Horse Power Promotions, the promoter who has put on the Hollister Motorcycle Rally for the last two years. Leather and metal filled the streets as far as the eye could see.

San Benito Street was closed off from Fourth to South streets to accommodate out-of-town vendors for the three-day event. Sixth and Seventh streets were reserved for VIP parking spaces, and half way through Friday, the streets were filled with Harley-Davidsons, Indian Motorcycles and others of every shape and size. Bikers wore leather vests and jackets, many with patches representing their clubs.

At Fremont School, Bulldog Boxing Club set up a boxing ring in one corner. A Saturday afternoon fight drew a crowd of hundreds as two 18-year-old fighters duked it out.

The “Wall of Death” also turned out to be a crowd favorite. To view the “Wall of Death” visitors dropped $5 a piece and walked up a flight of rickety wooden stairs to a platform, also made from the same rickety wood. In the center was a circular pit where first a man on a go-kart and then two men on motorcycles rode their vehicles around the walls.

By July 14, most signs of the rally were long gone and just a few stragglers on motorcycles were spotted around town – at least until next July.
