Pet lovers will find plenty of dogs and cats ready for adoption Aug. 30 as multiple animal rescue organizations and the Hollister Animal Shelter host a pet adoption fair just outside the main branch of San Benito Bank on Tres Pinos Road.

Animal rescuers perform the public service of taking in dogs and cats that would otherwise be euthanized at the county shelter. Different organizations perform varying services, but in general, the animals are dewormed, brought up to date on shots and, of course, spayed and neutered.

Ann Azevedo, the manager of Bad Dawgs Rescue, says that some agencies, like hers, even have the pets micro-chipped and tested for other health problems such as heartworms.

Once all this is done, pet fairs such as Saturday’s are held and the public has the chance to adopt pets that are ready for a loving home.

“Most agencies do a home check before the adoption is complete,” says Azevedo. “I will be doing home checks the day of the pet fair so that people can get their pets right away.”

Vivian Kennedy, executive director of All Creatures Great and Small, points out that rescue agencies have been extra busy as a result of all the foreclosures in Hollister.

“A lot of extra animals have been showing up at the shelter, or just being dumped by people who have lost their homes,” she notes.

Participating rescue agencies include All Creatures Great and Small, Noble Cats, SHARE Animal Rescue, Bad Dawg Rescue, the Hollister Animal Shelter and numerous individual rescuers.

Anyone interested in adopting a cat or dog can show up at 300 Tres Pinos Road and select a pet.

“There are great pets, lots of purebreds that will be there,” says Azevedo. “They are waiting to show their gratitude to someone who will take them home and love them.”
