Call it CAL FIRE

It may still say “CDF” on the doors of the trucks, but the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection adopted a new handle this week.

Director Ruben Grijalva announced the change to CAL FIRE Wednesday. The name is to be written in all capitals.

The new name is intended to be a simpler way to sum up the agencies many missions – fire protection, resource management and administering the office of the state fire marshal.

As a cost savings move, the new name will appear only as supplies are replaced.

Cool cash for freeze

The Small Business Administration is making low interest loans available to small businesses suffering losses connected with freezing temperatures earlier this month. San Benito County is among those included in the special program.

SBA’s recent disaster declaration makes low-interest Economic Injury Disaster Loans available to non-farm businesses as well as agricultural operations.

Further information is available by dropping by the local YMCA at 339 Fifth St. on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by calling 800-659-2955. Deadline to apply for assistance is Oct. 24 of this year.

Bring back St. Francis

JJ’s Homemade Burgers will donate 10 percent of all purchases now through Feb. 2 to help rebuild the 1864 Ranch House that burned down at the Saint Francis retreat center last summer. For more information, call 623-1748 or stop by the restaurant at 100 The Alameda in San Juan Bautista

Less hours in the lobby

Due to budget cuts adopted by the Hollister city council, the Hollister Police department is adjusting its public hours. Starting Jan. 29, the public lobby and telephone hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Police reports and vehicles releases must be requested before 3:30 p.m. The office is closed weekends and holidays. The change allows the department’s Records Bureau to process paperwork, compile statistics and prepare reports as required by law with limited resources.

For further information, contact Cpt. Richard Vasquez at 638-4110.

Two stabbings in Hollister

Jan 24. Hollister police responded to a stabbing at San Benito High School, near West and B Streets. One juvenile male was taken to Hazel Hawkins for treatment of a stab wound.

Four teenage boys were skateboarding in the parking lot when they were approached by two suspects, according to a police report. One 16-year-old suspect brandished a knife and the other 15-year-old suspect had an unknown weapon. The suspects threatened the victims and took one of their skateboards before the 16-year-old swung a knife at a victim and struck him on the left side of his head. Police took the two suspects into custody.

Another stabbing incident occurred Jan. 23 in which a 15-year-old male suffered six stab wounds on Westside Boulevard. Hollister fire and AMR personnel treated him at the scene and transported him to Hazel Hawkins Hospital, and then he was taken to a trauma center.

The stabbing was believed to be gang related according to a police report. Nine suspects fled the scene in two vehicles – a gray or green 90s Honda and a gray or green truck. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Hollister Police Department at 636-4330.
