There’s always plenty to see at Pebble Beach
Like I do every year, I went to this year’s AT
&
amp;T tournament at Pebble Beach and like every year there is,
whether you are a golf fan or not, a lot of things to see.
If you like golf you will see some of the best golfers in the
world (Tiger isn’t the only one that can play). It seems that they
never hit a bad shot, at least not by our standards. Their tempo is
always so smooth and controlled that if I play within a couple of
days of the tournament I will inherit it for a while, just a while
but it is worth it.

If you are not a golf fan there are numerous celebrities to watch and show you what it might feel like if it was one of us who got to play in the Pro Am. I’ve seen professional football players, baseball, tennis, surfing stars shacking on the first tee to the point that one year Jim Plunket could hardly start his backswing. And when he did, it was so fast and short I was amazed that his ball took off and landed behind the ladies’ tees.
But there was one thing I didn’t see. I didn’t see any kids – at least not very many and it really bothers me.
Golf is losing new golfers. We need to find a way to give kids a chance to play golf. Think about it – what other sport can a kid that isn’t really strong, or can’t run down a field and kick a goal or throw a football or baseball, play. Golf is that game that anyone can play, and not just when he or she is a kid but as long as they can hold a club and swing it. That can be their whole life. Sometimes instead of a computer game of golf, try a real game.
We have all read recently that obesity is becoming a growing problem with our youth. I hope that some of you that read this will decide to enroll your kids in a golf program this year. I think it is all right to turn off the computer and say, “Go out and play.” Play well.
