Caballero to Lead Youth Violence Committee
Sacramento – Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, whose district includes San Benito County, has been appointed to chair the newly formed Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention.
According to Caballero, the committee’s goal is to develop a “tool kit” of practices that communities can use to prevent violence – especially gang violence – by strengthening families and youth.
She is currently working with Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez to select members and schedule hearings for the committee.
“Finding ways to prevent gang violence has been a passion of mine,” she said. “My experience as mayor of Salinas convinced me that communities have to come together to find creative ways to divert our young people from the insidious appeal of gang membership.”
This is Caballero’s first term in the Assembly. She defeated Hollister businessman Ignacio Velazquez in the Nov. 7 election. In addition to serving as Salinas’ mayor, Caballero has worked as a criminal defense attorney and as the executive director of the violence prevention group Partners for Peace.
County Express Web Site Lauded by Publication
Hollister – San Benito County’s newly revamped transit Web site was recently named “Web site of the week” by Metro Magazine, a national transit publication.
The new Web site – www.sanbenitocounty
express.org – was launched on Jan. 1. The site features schedules, printable maps and transit news. According to transportation planner Veronica Lezama, the older, considerably clunkier Web site was created several years ago by an intern at the county transit agency.
San Benito’s County Express system offers buses on both fixed routes and through the Dial-a-Ride system.
Consulting company Moore and Associates prepared the new site as part of its update of San Benito’s short-range transit plan. When completed later this year, the plan should provide a blueprint for county transit improvements over the next five years.
Bolado Golf Course Clubhouse Vote Postponed
Hollister – Although Bolado Park Golf Club board members were hoping to get their plan for a new clubhouse approved this week, it will have to wait until next month.
The plan was presented to the 33rd Agricultural District grounds committee Wednesday morning, but did not make it onto the full board’s agenda for its evening meeting.
The clubhouse plan is expected to go before the 33rd Agricultural District board on March 14, said Denny Madigan, a board member and chairman of the grounds committee.
Madigan said he does not anticipate any problems with the plan. He added that the golf club seems to have followed the proper procedures in the design to replace the clubhouse, which was destroyed by a fire in January of 2006.
The grounds committee forwarded the plan to the state, which owns Bolado Park, for review to expedite the beginning of construction once plans are approved by the 33rd Agricultural District board, he said.
