Hollister School District trustees approved using bond money to fix water damage in the ceiling of a classroom at Ladd Lane School during the board meeting this week.
After some discussion, trustees agreed to pay for the work with $5,000 from Measure M, the $28.5 million general obligation facilities bond approved by voters in November 2014, instead of the maintenance fund.
“I just hate to pick little things out of the Measure M money,” said Trustee Pat Moore, who eventually voted in favor of using bond money to do the maintenance.
The work was just a quick repair so if heavy rains come, the classroom won’t have more damages, said John Teliha, the district’s director of facilities.
In May, the classroom experienced water damage from a broken water line in a restroom. As staff assessed the damage from the broken line, they found pre-existing ceiling damage caused by a leak in the section of the roof where the buildings connect to each other, according to the agenda packet.
Trustee Peter Hernandez echoed Moore’s comments and mentioned the importance of sticking to the bond priorities list, which did not include the ceiling repair project.
“And I imagine with the old schools that we have, things are going to keep coming up,” he said.
Teliha told trustees they could fund the work through the deferred maintenance account instead, but they voted to have the work funded with bond money.
