Summer heat wave continues in South County
The summer heat is definitely upon us; it has been really warm
out here in South County. I can’t believe it’s already August.
Christmas will be here before we know it!
Right about now it really starts to warm up and should stay hot
through September. It’s been a long summer so far. I hope we have a
really wet winter this year.

Belated birthday wishes go out to Bob Schmidt, who celebrated a birthday July 22. His son, Ted, held a barbecue in his honor at his home. Jeff and Jean Schmidt and Laurence and Donna Hansen spent the afternoon celebrating with Bob. Birthday wishes also go out to my dad and to Hec Hurley who both celebrated on July 27.
Congratulations to the King City Little League 12-year-old All-Stars on a very successful run. The team won the District 9 Championship, then went on to go 3-2 in the sectional tournament. The boys played great and battled hard against the Moreland District team before ending their run. The boys beat Moreland in their first meeting, putting Moreland into the loser’s bracket. King City went into the Championship game undefeated and only needed one more win to go on to the next tournament.Â
Unfortunately, Moreland proved to be a very tough match who won both of the next two games allowing them to win the tournament and leave us in second place. The boys went a long way in the All-Stars and everyone is very proud of their success. They beat a lot of really good teams and should be very proud of themselves. It’s been a long time since King City went that far. Congratulations King City, we’re all very proud of you all.
Several South County residents spent last weekend in La Honda at the La Honda Ranch Rodeo. La Honda is located off Hwy. 1 past Santa Cruz so the weather was cool and foggy, a great relief from all the hot weather we’ve been having out here. Some of those participating from our area included: The Hurley Family, The Brewen Family, Jessika Silva, Blake Willoughby, The Sans Family, Lisa and Kelsey French, Shane Higgins, Mike Garza, Ross Ketchum, Shauna and Carlos Castillo, Scott Spencer and Jerod Renz. Congratulations to Brody Sans for making his first eight-second ride in the steer riding and placing second in the event! We’re in trouble now. He can’t wait for the next one now! Everyone agreed the event was a great one, really well run and very family oriented. It’s definitely an event we will attend annually.
Unfortunately, while we were gone, our favorite family pet, the infamous one-eye dog, Shorty, escaped from his pen and hasn’t been seen since last Saturday evening. I’m sure something has become of him, but we keep hoping he’ll show up or someone may have picked him up along the road somewhere. You can’t miss him. He’s little, black, and has only one eye. If for some reason, he wandered out to the road and you’ve come across him, please be sure to give us a call. The kids really miss him.
If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, head on down to Paso Robles for the fair or out to the 101 Livestock Market for the Extreme Rodeo Bible Camp. World Champion Barrel Racer Lynn MacKenzie will be there giving a free barrel racing clinic and PRCA team roper Daniel Green will be putting on a free team roping clinic. For more information, contact the 101 Livestock Market for details.
Have a great week, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
