‘Bionic Woman’ remake up to snuff
If you are a hot chick and you nearly die in an accident, the
United States government will spend $50 million to save your
life.
I guess ugly people aren’t worth saving.
This appears to be the theme of NBC’s new show,
”
Bionic Woman.
”
Actually there are two bionic women
– one good, one bad – in the show. The good one is Jaime
Sommers. She’s a 23-year-old bartender with a teenage sister who
hates her. On the night Jaime tells her boyfriend she’s pregnant
and he asks her to marry him, they get in a car accident. Poor
Jaime is near death, but luckily her boyfriend
is a college professor who is also in charge of top-secret
bionic research.

This appears to be the theme of NBC’s new show, “Bionic Woman.” Actually there are two bionic women – one good, one bad – in the show. The good one is Jaime Sommers. She’s a 23-year-old bartender with a teenage sister who hates her. On the night Jaime tells her boyfriend she’s pregnant and he asks her to marry him, they get in a car accident. Poor Jaime is near death, but luckily her boyfriend is a college professor who is also in charge of top-secret bionic research.
So he decides to spend $50 million of the taxpayer’s money to save his girlfriend’s life. Probably because he is a nerdy professor and figures he will never get another chick as hot as Jaime.
Now Jaime has two bionic legs, an arm, one ear and one eye. She can run 60 mph and can see up to 2,000 feet. She also has a GPS tracker and a streaming video camera implanted in her brain.
She’s upset, though, because she didn’t want bionic parts. She’s angry because she lost her unborn child. Her boyfriend feels guilty and helps her get away so she can get back to her exciting life of bartending.
The head of the bionic research department is Jonas Bledsoe. He wants Jaime to work for the government. He tells her that he is her landlord since she has $50 million worth of his bionic parts.
The bionic research was developed for soldiers in Iraq and now Jaime is considered a soldier. Jonas wants her to start her training. After saving a woman who tried to commit suicide, Jaime decides to work for him, but she wants weekends off and to be home by 7 p.m. She also wants good health coverage for her sister.
The bad bionic woman is Sarah Corvus. She has two bionic legs, two arms, both eyes (one she did herself) and is working on a bionic chest. She is trying to make herself invincible. She even has bionic lungs and can smoke a cigarette and filter out all of the impurities.
It seems that 3 years ago she was the bionic prototype, but some thing went wrong and she killed 14 men in the bionic facility.
Her body is rejecting the bionic parts and she’s dying. She needs to study Jaime and find a way to help herself. Oh yeah, she was also responsible for the crash that almost killed Jaime and she shot and killed Jamie’s boyfriend. So Jaime really doesn’t want to help her.
At the end of the first episode they got into a cool rooftop fight in the pouring rain.
I really like this show. I sat down prepared to hate it and I didn’t like the first episode, but by the second it won me over. Sure, it’s corny, and some of the dialogue is kind of lame, but it’s fun.
On the other hand the actors take it just seriously enough and it has a good sense of humor. Michelle Ryan is good as Jaime Sommers and Katee Sackhoff is great as Sarah Corvus. Miguel Ferrer plays it cool as Jonas Bledsoe. He and Ryan have good chemistry together. Will Yun Lee is good as Jaime’s martial arts instructor and Sarah’s ex-boyfriend. I also like Molly Price who plays Jonas’ second in command.
The only character I don’t like is Baca, Jaime’s little sister. She’s annoying and I don’t know why Jaime puts up with her. Lucy Hale replaced an actress named Mae Whitman who played the role of Baca in an unaired pilot.
The character of Baca was originally supposed to be deaf, but hearing impaired advocates protested because the actress wasn’t deaf, so she was replaced. The whole deaf subplot was dropped and now she just hates her sister. In the third episode Sarah Corvus planned to kill her and deep down inside I was sort of hoping she would.
The action is great. There are some good fight sequences; this is the kind of show where everyone automatically knows kung fu. Jaime goes through intense training that makes Rocky look like a sissy.
I hope they don’t get rid of the Sarah Corvus character. She’s the best thing about the show. I think it would be good if she and Jaime worked together to fight crime. They have two distinct personalities that would work well off each other.
It’s a lot different from the original series, but it’s a good update. I recommend it.
“Bionic Woman” airs on both NBC and the Sci-Fi channel.
