The San Benito Lady ‘Balers won their opening game in the Tri-County Athletic League Tournament Tuesday in Hollister, defeating a visiting Watsonville squad 12-1.
The girls water polo team used plenty of passing and movement on the offensive end to find a slew of scoring opportunities.
Lila Yoldi, Katie Buzzetta, Jayme Telles, Summer Thomas, Kelsey Russell, Ronnie Stern, Sarah Kelso, Anna Dickson, Chelsea Bucaloy, Lauren Sutton, Jeanett Rodriguez and Amanda Virak all found the back of the net one time at San Benito High School Tuesday as the Lady ‘Balers cruised to a TCAL victory.
“It made them move on offense. It made them work on passing and movement,” coach Lacey Sutton said. “It gave some of our younger players a chance to play.”
San Benito scored six times in the first quarter and twice more before Watsonville scored a goal. Watsonville’s goal came with 2:17 remaining in the second quarter, approximately 11 minutes and 43 seconds into the game.
With an 8-1 lead at halftime, San Benito prevented Watsonville from scoring again.
San Benito will now play Thursday at 6 p.m., against Salinas at Santa Catalina. San Benito defeated Salinas 12-9 on Sept. 4, in what was the team’s first game of the season.
“It’ll be a fast game. It’ll be an experienced game, but we want it really bad,” Sutton said. “A couple of seniors want another shot at Santa Catalina. They’ve got second the last two years in the TCAL. They don’t want to get second again.”
In other news, the boys water polo team will open their TCAL Tournament today at San Benito High School. The ‘Balers will host Stevenson at 3:30 p.m., after Stevenson defeated Watsonville on Monday.
