First mission accomplished
Sometimes it takes a little bit of visibility to get things fixed. That is the premise behind a new feature in the Weekend Pinnacle, that we launched Sept. 21, called “Public Works.” We encourage the community to notify us of places around the city or county that need a little handiwork to make them safe or get them looking a little nicer.
For the first installment, we chose a retaining wall along Third Street that was spotted with graffiti and a faded mural. It was an eyesore along the bottom of Park Hill. When we reported to the Parks Department that the wall needed attention Sept. 19, we weren’t sure how long it would be before the staff got to painting the wall. As reported in the Oct. 12 edition, the parks department has just a staff of three and they are responsible for maintenance not just of parks, but of city buildings as well. They take care of painting, plumbing, electrical work and many other things for the city.
So we weren’t sure how quickly they would get to painting over the blighted wall along Park Hill. To our surprise, less than two weeks after the photo ran, the wall had been repainted. We noticed the clean, gray paint Oct. 4 and since then the wall has stayed clean of new graffiti. While we know a fresh coat of paint is a quick fix, we commend the Parks Department staff for their quick service to the issue and think the new paint makes Hollister seem like a nicer place to live.
