HOLLISTER

The often-dreaded deadline for income taxes isn’t for another five months, but many in San Benito County must pony up their property taxes by 5 p.m. Monday to avoid penalties.

The tax collector’s office, 440 Fifth St., Room 107, Hollister, will accept payments in person on Monday.

Using a credit card, taxpayers can call (800) 2PAY-TAX.

Property owners can also pay on the Web, at www.officialpayments.com, using the San Benito County Jurisdiction Code of 1512.

Payments may be a few dollars higher this year for many county landowners.

A special mail-in ballot passed this year to fund a mosquito abatement program through property taxes.

The program will require an annual budget of about $120,000 paid from the assessment. Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Aromas, Paicines and Tres Pinos will get services.

Single-family homeowners will pay $9.80, while apartment owners could pay up to $6.37 per unit.

Agricultural property owners will pay up to eight cents per acre.
