Gay orientation offends reader

Regarding letters condemning Martha Gregory, who stated the “Brokeback Mountain” movie is a “slap in the face” to those of faith.

Why is it that certain letter writers condemn Martha Gregory for inferring that the pro-homosexual movie, Brokeback Mountain, offends those of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith? Last time I checked none of these religions or faiths view homosexuality as morally acceptable. These letter writers also quote Jesus’ golden rule and the importance of loving one another, both from the Bible, to rationalize their argument. They must also know then that the Bible clearly states that homosexuality is a sin, but more importantly stresses to hate the sin, not the sinner.

I will concede that our culture has become more tolerant and accepting of the homosexual lifestyle, but to imply that the Bible, the Koran and the Torah support this “acceptance” of homosexuality is utterly false and disingenuous.

For Dog’s sake, get it straight

Will someone there at the Pinnacle please tell Kate Woods to pick a deity and stick with it? Her column is enjoyable but slightly confusing. She writes “For Dog’s sake…” and “Why on Dog’s earth …” then does a flip flop that would make John Kerry proud and writes “Christ! All I wanted was a Mr. Potato Head” and more than a dozen uses of the word “CHRISTmas” throughout the column. If Dog is indeed your deity of choice then shouldn’t you be writing “Woof! All I wanted was a Mr. Potato Head” or “SPOTmas Day” or gathered ’round the “FIDO tree?” I want to make it clear that I’m not persecuting Kate for her religious views, I’m doing it because her writing tells me that she doesn’t really believe in the dribble she says she does. And if it’s true in this instance, then what else are you writing about that you really don’t believe in?

Rally should be preserved

The town of Hollister has always been known to attract motorcycles of all kinds. The Independence Day Biker Rally has been a unique nonviolent, successful annual event for downtown Hollister. The problem with this event came when Hollister had to pay the bill for police work. Does this mean that by switching this event to the airport Hollister will be more successful at paying the bill for the police work? Hollister then decided they needed to collect the taxes from this event. When collection time came, the city wasn’t successful at collecting its fair share. Does all this mean the event should be switched to the airport?

If the accounting for the cost of police work is correct, then the real issue seems to be the cost of safety (money). How can the cost of police work be less if this event is held at the airport? What difference does it make that a police officer comes from Monterey, Gilroy or Fresno? Officers will be working somewhere anyway so why not in Hollister? If the safety issue is of the most concern, why not figure out some fundraising ideas to offset the cost or allow for this expense in the annual city budget.

It seems unfair that a handful of no votes can suddenly keep this event from going on. Nine years of planning this event should count for something. Instead of containing the event downtown, bikers will be riding in all directions from the airport to get to downtown anyway. It sounds like things are starting to get complicated.

Thanks to all for a second chance

My name is John Raymond Wolgamott. I am one of the homeless of Hollister. I am writing you to ask that you publish my feelings of gratitude and appreciation to the people of this community.

So many people have and do believe in me since I have gotten back to work and started to rebuild my life. I would also like to thank the Zanger family for extending me employment at Casa de Fruta. I have been employed as a mechanic for the past nine months.

I lost everything that was dearest to my heart approximately two-and-a-half years ago and I just lost the love of my life to another man one year ago, but I am working my way through it.

The homeless shelter of San Benito County is a Godsend and is better than anything in Silicon Valley. They offer help for health problems as well as help for the acceptance of the loss of one near and dear to one’s heart. To this I give a heartfelt thank you very much.
