The race for San Benito County Superintendent of Schools is the toughest one for us to call. Dee Brown and incumbent Tim Foley are both lifelong educators. While Brown is a full-time real estate agent, she continues to teach part-time at the college level and has worked as a teacher, principal and at the county level.
But after much deliberation and after conversation with other educators, our vote goes to Foley. As one member of The Pinnacle editorial board put it, “if it ain’t broke, why fix it?” An area educator said it differently: “Tim hasn’t done anything wrong – certainly not anything that would merit not reelecting him.”
After 10 years in office Foley has assembled a team of the county’s most talented educators and he has had the good sense to place people like Mike Sanchez, Susan Villa and Lorna Gilbert in key positions.
Foley is versatile. He is both respected and liked throughout rural school districts, and lauded by the county’s largest district, Hollister elementary, for being an eager volunteer whenever needed.
Foley told us he anticipates this will be his last term in office. We sincerely hope that four years from now, Brown’s name appears on the ballot.
