There Were More Important Things than Slip of the Tongue
There Were More Important Things than Slip of the Tongue

Editor,

The Republicans say that the Democrats will be soft on terrorism. But, in the 1940s, President Roosevelt stopped terrorism in Europe, and President Truman stopped terrorism in the Pacific. Both presidents were Democrats.

President Bush, a Republican, attacked Democrat John Kerry for a slip of the tongue that appeared to be putting down our troops in Iraq. However, Kerry is a combat veteran, knows what it is like to be in war, and did not mean to put down combat troops. Bush has never been in combat, has no real idea of what it is like to be in combat, and is just using Kerry’s slip of the tongue to avoid more important issues.

Even though they are running scared in upcoming elections, the Republicans need to debate issues of more substance than a slip of the tongue. The war in Iraq, torture, abortion, mixing religion and government, stacking the Supreme Court with religious conservatives, stem cell research, the high cost of gas, universal health care, and immigration come to mind.

Nurse Situation Should Not

Be About Wage Parity

Editor,

If the nurses at Hazel Hawkins want to make the wages that they make in Salinas and Gilroy, then they should move there or else commute to that area. They make a very good wage. None of the city and county employees in this county make comparable wages to those people in Gilroy and Salinas. Let them leave and put miles on their vehicles and pay more money in gas. Why should the nurses be given preferential treatment over police, fire, and other government employees that DO NOT receive comparable wages as those in Gilroy and Salinas (or Monterey and Santa Clara County for that matter). I can see more staffing, but wage parity should be out of the question unless everyone else that works for government gets the same.
