Give thanks for the soldiers
As you sit down for your holiday meal, surrounded by family and
friends, I hope you will remember how the privilege of this freedom
to gather together came to be. It is due to the outstanding
Americans, young and old, who serve our country in places where few
dare to tread, in conditions even fewer envy, looking out for you
and your family. They are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice so
you can celebrate in the freedom that they continue to protect.
They have sacrificed time with their loved ones and the security of
a safe home to serve thousands of miles away from all that they
cherish. They endure harsh conditions and often miss meals as they
selflessly fulfill their duty. They do not sit down to a feast,
surrounded by family. Instead, their holidays are often bleak and
in harm’s way.
As you sit down together, remember these selfless
individuals
– the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers and
oftentimes neighbors – who hope to come home soon to be with their
loved ones in the security of our country. Take time to remember
them, as their families miss them and wish they were home too.
And finally, don’t forget their families as well. They, too,
have sacrificed the presence of their loved one(s) serving
thousands of miles away. As you hug your family members, remember
those who would love to be able to do the same, but cannot.
