Our first Red Phone caller of the week, concerned about weeds
growing near her Hollister home, asked the Crimson Crusader to get
something done about tall weeds and grass littered with a growing
collection of empty beer bottles on the corner of Talbot and Ladd
Lane. The Crimson Crusader put a call through to dedicated public

Our first Red Phone caller of the week, concerned about weeds growing near her Hollister home, asked the Crimson Crusader to get something done about tall weeds and grass littered with a growing collection of empty beer bottles on the corner of Talbot and Ladd Lane. The Crimson Crusader put a call through to dedicated public servant Marcello Orta at the Hollister Public Works Department to find out what could be done.

Orta, a man of swift action, said he would try to send a crew out to take care of the weeds and trash Wednesday. Orta said work crews have been busy cleaning up along Airline Highway from Enterprise to Union roads and are making a diligent effort to clean up weeds and trash near sound walls throughout our fair city.

Orta said the Public Works Department is also taking a new tack in dealing with vacant lots and other areas prone to tall weeds. Crews are beginning to use a new chemical that will prevent weeds from growing in these locations in the future.

Renegade Shopping Carts

Our next Red Phone caller, a sweet Hollister resident, asked the Crimson Crusader what could be done to prevent people from abandoning shopping carts in her vacant yard. Our caped hero called Hollister’s venerable Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless to find out, but was informed he wasn’t in Tuesday.

Nonetheless, Chambless is the man to talk to when it comes to shopping carts. Shoot him an e-mail at

to report your problems with those four-wheeled nuisances. And, dear caller, there’s no reason to fret if you’re not e-mail savvy. The Hollister Code Enforcement Officer can also be reached via the telephone at 636-4360.

Long-Term Parking

Our next Red Phone call come from a local resident concerned about cars parked on her street for months at a time and other cars leaking oil. The Crimson Crusader answered this important question recently. If people on your street are leaving their cars, motorhomes or boats parked in the street for months without using the vehicles or moving them, contact city Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless. However, if you see people dumping oil in storm drains, call the police.

Christmas Wishes

The Crimson Crusader received the final Red Phone matter of the week via e-mail. Our writer wanted to know what the Crimson Crusader is wishing for this Christmas. Ho, ho, ho. Well, the Crimson Crusader would really like to get behind the wheel of a 1961 California Edition Ferrari GT250. But, our hero will settle for a few more opportunities to help local residents and answer important questions like those in this column.
